Pain is inevitable but suffering is a choice quote:
“Pain is inevitable, but suffering is a choice. Trade your expectation for appreciation. Suffering ends in that moment.”
– Tony Robbins
Understand the big idea or meaning behind this quote:
It seems very insensitive to say suffering is a choice or that suffering is optional. But I think it’s generally good advice. Let me explain…
That’s not to deny the pain or trauma of an experience you’ve gone through, but the follow up questions is now what…
Life can be hard and tough for some.
Tragedies and injustices happen daily.
But what are you going to do about it? What are you going to do with the hand the was dealt to you?
Maybe we can take a page out of Kobe Bryant’s handbook, “what I’ve learned is to always keep going….ALWAYS. There’s been times, particularly early in my career, where it just feels like this is the end. But what I’ve come to find out, no matter what happens, the storm eventually ends. When the storm does end you want to make sure you’re ready.”
Or see what Charlie Munger has to say, “Whenever you think that some situation or some person is ruining your life, it’s actually you who are ruining your life. It’s such a simple idea. Feeling like a victim is a perfectly disastrous way to go through life. If you just take the attitude that however bad it is in anyway, it’s always your fault and you just fix it as best you can … I think that really works.”
Victor Frankl had all the reasons to be angry at the world, letting the holocaust happen being in Auschwitz, losing his family. Yet he used that experience and turned it into one of the greatest books that’s helped millions of people find their way in life. To cope with their pain and to overcome.
Charlie also gives the example of a parent who finds out their child has diagnosed with cancer. It’s a terrible blow. But what can you do about it, it’s already happened and if you spend a second playing victim you’re wasting time and energy.
Jim Rohn says, “spend a second complaining and you have wasted a second.”
I believe that’s the big idea behind this quote. To acknowledge pain is inevitable, that life is tough, but you don’t have to suffer indefinitely. It may sting for a while, but it will pass. Don’t get addicted to your suffering and don’t stay in it. As Tony says, “Trade your expectation for appreciation. Suffering ends in that moment.”
