Feeling Lack of Progress in Life:
“Lack of emotion causes lack of progress and lack of motivation.”
– Tony Robbins
Understand the meaning or big idea behind this quote:
Say what you want about Napoleon Hill and whether he is a fraud (it’s a long rabbit hole but you’re welcome for opening that door).
I still believe he was an early student of personal development and had some good teachings that are still relevant today.
For example, “The starting point of all achievement is DESIRE. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small fire makes a small amount of heat.”
To me this internal ambition or desire to achieve comes down with constantly asking yourself what do you want to do in life? What do you want to contribute? What’s got you going?
The answers you come up with, the stronger they make you feel, the further you will be willing to go on the journey to be humbled, humiliated and still progress.
Tying this in with two other quotes or teachings of Tony Robbins
Tony asks when people first start learning something new, how quick do they learn?
The answer is really fast.
There’s this rapid improvement, they get to 20-30% skill but most get to this plateau and then they quit. They say to themselves, “oh, that wasn’t for me.”
Tony says, “Some people, their philosophy of life is dabbling. Here’s what a dabbler does. They take on a sport like, let’s say, tennis. And when their brand new they know nothing about tennis, they don’t hold the racket. They don’t how to swing or to keep score. They think love is an emotion when it’s a zero (a tennis joke, took me a while to get it).”
Dabbler’s by their nature are not happy because they never get proficient at something. When you feel competent and in control at your position, when you struggle and get good at something, you’ll be happier.
Progress = Equals Happines
Second Quote:
The success cycle can works in both ways, spiral up or spiral down. It’s the difference why the rich keep getting richer, and poor keep getting poorer.
The example Tony gives goes something like this:
A sales person comes to the door, he has little emotion and doesn’t believe in what he’s selling, he says, “you wouldn’t happen to want to buy this, would you?” Or he may not say that directly but it shows through his body and voice.
What kind of results would expect this to bring?
Little.
How does that affect his beliefs?
A lot.
What kind of potential would he believe he has?
Not much.
How much future action would he then take?
Tony says, “Most people don’t take enough action. But some do. Of those that do, they may not have enough belief in themselves or what they are selling. This has a massive impact on their results which reaffirms what they thought was possible minimizing their potential and future action.”
