courage is not the absence of fear

What is courage.

“What is courage? Courage does not mean you’re not afraid. It means you’re afraid and you do it anyways. You’re scared shitless, but you do it anyway. And I think if you’re going to succeed at the highest level, you’ve got to face those fears.”

Sometimes it takes hearing the same idea expressed in a different light to make new discoveries and insights we otherwise never had considered. Here’s a section with similar quotes:

  1. “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” ― Nelson Mandela

The meaning behind the quote:

People who succeed at the highest level don’t fear anyless than you and me. They simply have learned and trained to push through and manage their fears.

It’s sort of become familiar to them, they can perform under-pressure. And this is not some 0 to 100 kind of thing either. It’s a skill and like all skills it’s learned incrementally.

Jim Rohn is often considered as one of the greatest business philosophers and speakers. He talks about his experience how he first got started in speaking. He was invited to an office to share his principles that led him to achieve financial success.

He describes how when he first got up, his mind sat down. Probably not his greatest speech, but he got up and did it again, and then did it again.

Purpose of fear

Fear served a purpose, it’s main evolutionary goal was the survival of the organism. But many of our fears in modern society are irrational. Public speaking isn’t going to kill you, but many would opt-in to die before they had to give a speech.

If you’re fearful of something, it’s worthwhile to ask yourself why? And to try and pin-point what’s the worse thing that could happen if all goes wrong.

Sure you may miss out on an opportunity, but you would’ve missed it by not taking the chance in the first place. And so, most fears boil down to fear of being judged or being rejected, but like all the great worries of the past, you persevered and they are now an after thought. Know that you’ll be able to handle whatever is on your plate and you’re capable of more then you give yourself credit for.

Here’s one of my notes from a lecture of Tony Robbins on fear,

“If you’re feeling fear, what does that mean? Usually, what’s the message? The message always is that you need to change something. Every negative emotion means I’ve got to change something. Either my perception or what I’m doing. Fear means that you’ve got to prepare for something. You’re afraid because your brain’s message is to prepare. Now, sometimes we just indulge in emotion and we stay in the fear. We really are prepared. You did the work, but you didn’t shut the emotion off and say, you know, I am prepared. No reason to be afraid anymore. I’m ready. I’m ready. You never told your brain it’s okay, you don’t have to give me a message anymore, I’ve done my work.”
