Complexity is the enemy of execution
“Complexity is the enemy of execution.”
– Tony Robbins
The meaning behind the quote:
The more you build up something in your head, the more complicated you make it, the less likely you will be to follow through.
People who like to run just put on their shoes and go.
Those that fail think about not having the right shoes, I need to first get this smart watch, the weather’s not right, it’s bad on the knees, I need running headphones, I haven’t yet planned my route, it would nice to have a buddy come with me, etc.
How to avoid this trap:
Some things are complicated to do, but by breaking the complex thing into digestible pieces you’re likely to overcome.
To stick with the running example, instead of all these ideas occupying your head at once break it down. It’s true having running gear, headphones, working on proper from to prevent injury are all important but not necessarily in the beginning. For day #1 just start with lacing up your shoes and go for a light 3 minute jog.
You’ll find that the first step is the hardest.
But after the three minutes, you say to yourself let’s go five, I am already out there so let’s go a little further than what I had planned. After day #1 you know may have a short route planned and it expands the more days you go. After a couple of runs, you say to yourself, I am going to get myself some nice shoes. You do your research and you then buy.
All these little things get broken down into smaller milestones and a year in you’re practically an expert on running. You know about proper hydration for longer runs, breathing technique, running form, you have the equipment, you look the part.
The idea behind Occam’s Razors
This idea of liking complexity is a human tendency, we struggle to believe that the simplest answer could be right. We would like to believe complex explanations over simple ones.
But the idea of Occam’s razor is the simplest answer, the one that makes the least assumptions is often the right one.
For example:
a) Some children are playing with basketball and the ball rolls onto the road.
b) Some children are intentionally rolling their balls onto the road, in hopes that the car stops and they can loot the car so they can have money for candy.
A) is more likely to be true, but Occam’s razor does make the assertion that the simples answer is right. Your neighborhood could be booming with thieving children.
