a coward dies 1000 deaths, the brave but one

A coward dies a thousand deaths:

“A coward dies a thousand deaths, a courageous man only once. I discipline myself, not perfectly, but for the most part, I don’t worry about shit till it happens. You know, I anticipate it, but I don’t worry about it.”
– Tony Robbins

Sometimes it takes hearing the same idea expressed in a different light to make new discoveries and insights we otherwise would’ve remained ignorant to. Here’s a section on similar quotes to this idea of coward dying a 1000 deaths.

  1. “A coward dies a thousand times before his death, but the valiant taste of death but once. It seems to me most strange that men should fear, seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come.” ― William Shakespeare, Julius Caesar
  2. “The coward dies a thousand deaths, the brave but one’…. (The man who first said that) was probably a coward…. He knew a great deal about cowards but nothing about the brave. The brave dies perhaps two thousand deaths if he’s intelligent. He simply doesn’t mention them.” – Ernest Hemingway
  3. “A coward dies a thousand deaths A soldier dies but once” – Tupac Shakur

The meaning behind the quote:

Ernest Hemingway says, “The brave dies perhaps two thousand deaths if he’s intelligent. He simply doesn’t mention them.”

It’s not that the brave man doesn’t fear – he fears greatly but he also has trained himself to fight through the battles. To him fear doesn’t even register because he will push through it. So when people ask him weren’t you afraid of failing or afraid of x,y,z, he may say yeah but this is just what I do. The only death he faces is when accepts the losses as permanent defeat.

The coward succumbs to the pressures of everyday life, he post-pones and procrastinates. Everyday he loses the battle to fear and anxiety so in that way he dies a thousand deaths before his final one. The coward never sought to live a meaningful life because he never stepped in the arena, he feared the end result.
